Trip plan for sea kayak to Ripapa Island

 

  • 7am meet at gear shed- load kayaks and pack gear for trip
  • 8am, certs meet at gear shed- introduce ourselves and go over the plan for the day, make sure they have all the right gear for the day, find out any medical conditions.
  • Aim to leave gear shed by 8.30am
  • Arrive at Case Bay by 9am
  • Unload the kayaks and fit the certs with BA’s, helmets and paddles.
  • 9.30am- Do a safety talk- dry land wet exit.
  • 10am- on water, get people paddling around to see were they are at

 

 

  • Leave Cass bay by 10.30 and paddle east out of Cass Bay passed Erskina Point (Tapoa). Along the slipway and across the port entrance keep paddling along the docks and then cross over the channel from the Breakwater to Stoddart Point. Then keep heading east across Purau Bay to Ripapa Island, arrive at 12.30pm where we will get out and take a tour of Ripapa Island and have lunch on the opposite beach.
  • Leave at 2pm and paddle back west across Purau Bay and follow the souther coast to Puaaohinekotau Head and cross over to the east side of Quail Island where we will cross back over the channel to Cass Bay, arriving at 4.30

 

 

  • Cass Bay to Ripapa Island- 10.30-12.30pm- 6.5km
  • Ripapa Island to Cass Bay- 7.5km
  • Low Tide at 2.40pm

 

 

Contingency plan:

 

  • Come out of Cass Bay at 10.30 on the east side and cross over to the western side of Quail Island and check out the ship grave yard, head round to King Billy Island and take a quick look round the Island. Then paddle across to Swimmers Beach on Quail Island and pull the boats up. 12.30pm   
  • Take a trip to the top of Quail Island; stopping at the top to serve lunch, head back down at 2pm. 
  • Leave Quail Island  by 3pm and paddle out round the eastern side and cross back over to Cass Bay arriving there at 4.30pm      

 

 

 

  • Cass Bay to King Billy Island to Quail Island- 10.30-12.30- 4.5km
  • Return trip to top of Quail Island- 12.30pm- 3pm
  • Quail Island to Cass Bay 3.5km- 3pm- 4.30pm
  • Low Tide at 2.40pm

Risk reduction strategies

people

1/ not paddling correctly in waves or round rocks, pulling people out.2/ bad paddling techniques, mucking around on rocks. Crash the van; drop a boat from the trailer on to someone, fall of the trailer.

4/ not holing onto paddle if capsize, not securing gear properly in and on the boat, dragging boat on rocks or concrete, misuse of gear, not pulling rudder up when in shallows. Drop a boat off the trailer, drop helmet on concrete/rocks, trailer not hooked on correctly, boats not tied on trailer correctly.

5/ having trouble paddling, don’t bring the right gear to keep warm and dry, picking on/ excluding others, medical issues depression, etc… van driver driving recklessly.     

 

 

 

 

There will be a comprehensive briefing about what clients need to bring for the trip, and a medical check. The trip is being run by experienced paddlers with the aid of three helpers that all have their comprehensive first aid. All guides carry safety and rescue equipment on them at all times as well as extra dry gear. All clients will be tested on any previous kayak experience and there will be a comprehensive safety and paddle talk prior to launch, this will include all paddle strokes, using the rudder and paddling in the wind and waves. As well as what to do if they capsize. This will continue throughout the day as required.All gear will be packed and boats tied to trailer before clients arrive, all guides are well skilled at tying and securing boats and gear to a trailer. All drivers have their full licence and follow strict rules and guidelines of Kapai Adventures. Kapai Adventures employees are people persons with hi energy and a passion for getting people involved and giving guidance for those of all abilities. 

Equipment

1/ misuse of equipment and boat2/misuse of equipment and boat might cause dislocated shoulder/ banged up against rocks.  

3/ not having the right/extra gear to keep warm and dry

5/ misuse of equipment and boat. People that cant get the hang of it could get frustrated/upset

Environment

1/ Strong winds/big waves, swell around rocks, submerged rocks just under the surface. Wake from big boats/ships.2/ get hit by another vessel on the water, fall on slippery rocks, cut on barb wire, swell pushes boat on rocks, have to paddle too hard in strong wind. Rain makes roads slippery for van.  

3/ cold water and wind/ rain

4/ strong wind blows gear away, rising water washes gear away, waves/wind pushes boat on rocks, damage rudder on shallow rocks. Rain makes roads slippery for van. 

5/ strong wind/big waves makes paddling hard and frustrating, cold wind and water makes people cold and miserable      

 

 

 

 

 

There will be a comprehensive briefing about what clients need to bring for the trip. The weather will be checked leading up to and on the day using several reliable sources to make sure the weather is suitable for a manageable trip. The trip is being run by experienced paddlers with the aid of three helpers that all have their comprehensive first aid and are trained in sea kayak rescues. All guides carry safety and rescue equipment on them at all times as well as extra dry gear. There will be a comprehensive safety and paddle talk prior to launch, this will include all paddle strokes, using the rudder and paddling in the wind and waves. As well as what to do if they capsize. This will continue throughout the day as required.

Emergency procedures:

 

The lead guides are trained in sea kayak rescue and have their comprehensive first aid cert. all guides carry the appropriate rescue gear needed.

The lead guides carry radios on them as well as a kit consisting of a repair kit, first aid kit, flares, a burner and extra dry clothes.

 

In the event of an accident/emergency the lead guide will delegate rolls to each of the leaders in order to keep the rest of the clients out of harms way. All appropriate measures will be taken to resolving the situation at had, if the situation requires extra help then the appropriate authorities will be notified by radio immediately.
